W. McFate (Mack) Smith MD, RADM (Ret.) died at his home on Feb. 25, 2011. Born in 1926, McFate had a career in research and academic medicine that spanned more than 50 years. He retired from the U.S. Public Health Service in 1973 after becoming a Region 9 health director, rear admiral, and assistant surgeon general of the United States. He also retired from UCSF, where he spent 20 years as professor of medicine, and director of the Preventive Medicine Residency Program at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health. He was a leading expert in high blood pressure and other cardiovascular risk factor research.
