Kay Wallis lives in Richmond, Calif., and has been active in several community-based efforts there to promote public health and social justice. Campaigns include a ballot initiative to tax sugary drinks; a groundbreaking plan for the city to seize distressed mortgages from banks to protect homeowners from foreclosure; opposition that prevented a casino from being built at Pt. Molate; and ongoing demands for the Chevron refinery to operate more cleanly and safely, and for the Chevron Corporation to pay its fair share of taxes. She and her husband, Juan Reardon MD, MPH ’89, are founding members of the Richmond Progressive Alliance (RPA), a grassroots organization of community activists. The RPA regularly utilizes media advocacy principles and techniques once taught at SPH.
