Vice Admiral Regina M. Benjamin MD, MBA, the 18th Surgeon General of the United States, visited UC Berkeley on March 17, 2011. While on campus, she presented a public lecture, “A Vision for a Healthy and Fit Nation,” in which she highlighted the alarming trend of overweight and obese Americans. Her visit was cosponsored by the School of Public Health and the College of Natural Resources at UC Berkeley.

Later that same day, Dr. Benjamin toured The Edible Schoolyard, a one-acre organic garden and kitchen classroom for public school students at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Berkeley. The Edible Schoolyard is a program of the Chez Panisse Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by chef and author Alice Waters.
